Dada, Let Mama Rest

As I was getting ready this morning, I glanced at the bed again, and it seemed like it was calling out to me. Ughhh. I gave in to the temptation and went back to it!

“You need to be at work early!” I reminded myself.

But the fluffy comforter and the softness of the bed made it so hard to get up!

Meanwhile, Enzo and Jay were both in the bedroom, just messing around with each other, and honestly, I wasn’t paying much attention.

Jay sat on the bed, and all I heard from Enzo was, “Dada, let Mama rest,” in his stern little voice.

I opened my eyes in surprise, and while I was in shock, I saw Enzo ushering Jay out of the room as he closed the door behind him.

Wow. I’m speechless.

My 3-year-old just did that.

As I lay there, I couldn’t help but smile, not just at Enzo’s thoughtfulness but also at the realization that this moment was a reflection of what he’s been learning from Jay. Jay has always made it a point in making sure I get the rest I need, especially on weekends when I can finally sleep in. I often hear him gently remind Enzo to let Mama rest, and now, without any prompting, Enzo was echoing those same words.

It’s in these small moments that we realize just how much our children absorb from us. They’re like little sponges, soaking up everything we say and do, even when we think they’re not paying attention. This morning was a powerful reminder that our actions and words have a significant impact on the little ones watching us.

As parents, mentors, or simply as individuals, we have a responsibility to be mindful of the lessons we’re teaching, even when we’re not actively trying to teach. Our children learn compassion, kindness, and respect not just from the words we say, but from the way we live our lives.

This experience has taught me that every moment is an opportunity to model the behavior we hope to see in the world. It’s not always easy, and we won’t always get it right, but being aware of our influence can help us strive to be better each day.

So, let’s take a lesson from this. Whether you’re a parent, a sibling, or a friend, remember that someone is always looking up to you. Your actions and words have the power to shape someone’s life. Let’s choose to be the kind of people who inspire others to be their best selves, just as Jay’s quiet, consistent actions inspired Enzo to show such thoughtfulness at such a young age.

It’s a beautiful reminder that when we lead with love and kindness, those around us—especially our children—will naturally follow suit. Let’s continue to be the examples of the change we want to see, knowing that our influence extends far beyond what we can imagine.

I’d love to hear your stories! Has your child ever surprised you with a thoughtful gesture that left you speechless?
